About the Item

Rooted in centuries of ceramic tradition, this early 20th-century porcelain washstand set draws from the enduring beauty of Canton export ware and the romantic storytelling of Blue Willow patterning. Produced sometime between 1900 and 1920, this piece reflects a moment in time when global trade, European fascination with the East, and daily rituals of refinement intersected in the home. Unlike common transferware of the era, this set features hand-painted chinoiserie motifs rendered with elegant brushwork—each line depicting serene river scenes, tiered pagodas, mountains, birds in flight, and drooping willow trees. The organic variation in the artwork reveals a human touch lost in mass production, adding soul to the already stunning form. On the base of the pitcher, a hand-painted number “9” serves as a discreet artisan’s mark—typical of small-batch ceramic workshops during the late Edwardian and early interwar period.
