About the Item

A scarce and fine antique English porcelain cream jug decorated with gilded patterning by Caughley and dating from around 1780. The pail shaped jug stands on a narrow round foot with a wide round top with a beak shaped pouring spout and ear shaped ridged handle applied to the opposite side. Made in white bodied porcelain the jug has blue painted banding around the top rim and around the lower body the upper section heightened with patterned gilded banding with a gilded rim and with a gilded leaf garland wrapped around the lower blue line. A further gilded leaf design is applied to the handle. The jug has an underglaze blue crescent mark applied to the base. Provenance: Private Collection and acquired through the UK Art Market. In good condition with customary wear and aging with rubbing to the gilding around the top rim.

A very fine Aesthetic Movement Royal Worcester triangular shaped jug hand painted with flowers and butterflies and made for Bailey Banks & Biddle in Philadelphia dated 1882. The porcelain jug is very reminiscent of the designs of Christopher Dresser with its angles and patterning and is formed in the shape of a triangle on a slightly wider foot with a decorative scroll and loop terminal handle and with a shaped top rim with a raised pouring spout with a low relief embossed stylized floral motif below and with an embossed floral edge border around the upper rim. The jug has a Z pattern border around the foot and is hand painted with floral and butterfly patterns around the body in colored enamels on ivory ground. The handle, upper rim, the embossed design and Z patterning around the foot are all painted in a satin brown color and highlighted with gilding which has also been used to outline the hand painted patterning to the body. The jug has a puce printed maker’s mark to the base along with a date code for 1882 and has puce printed retailers mark for Bailey Banks & Biddle.
