About the Item
The arms on this Chinese Export armorial plate were made for the Cuban noble Marquis de Almendares Ignacio Herrera.
The plate is finely enameled in rose medallion with bird and lantern pattern. The centre decorated with gold coronet and inscription Exmo Sor Marques de Almendares
Made for the Cuban Marquis de Almendares Ignacio Herrera in 1842. He was an owner of coffee and sugar plantations, railroads and textile mills. His family was originally a famous Spanish family.
Reference: See H., P. and N. Schiffer, China for America, Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th centuries, p. 184 where it is stated that the service was made for the Cuban Marquis de Almendares Ignacio Herrera who purchased this colonial title in 1842. Herrera was the great-grandson of Gonzalo Jose de Herrera, Conde of Fernandina, a grandee of Spain. Ignacio Herrera owned large coffee and sugar plantations, railroads and a textile mill. He probably ordered the service soon after he became ennobled.
