Haviland Limoges Butterfly Handled Cup and saucer set, 1879-1889, Aesthetic

About the Item

Cup and saucer set by Haviland & Cie is decorated in Aesthetic style, combining elements of 3 different patterns. Meadow Visitors butterflies, placed between Bracquemond style sprays of pink roses and blue cornflowers, are accentuated with grey and gold medallions in abstract design. The butterflies and roses are decorated with raised enamel accents, and the butterfly shaped handle is outlined with delicate gold veins, tracing the wing pattern. The cup is 2.12" tall and 3.5" wide at the rim; the saucer is 5.65" in diameter. Set uses butterfly handled blank that was in production for relatively short time; factory decorated pieces are rather rare due to limited supply and fragility of the cups. This set is marked with the blue donut-shaped decorator mark, used in 1879-1889, on both cup and saucer, and underglaze green manufacturer marks: H&C on the cup, dating it 1876-1879, and H&C/L on the saucer, dating it 1876-1889. Examples of similar decorations, utilizing abstract border designs instead of medallions on china with Meadow Visitors decor, can be seen in Haviland China: Age of Elegance by N. Travis; in Evolution of Haviland China design another version of this pattern, utilizing both birds and butterflies instead of just the butterflies, similar flower sprays, and orange and grey medallions, is attributed to Felix Bracquemond. China decorators of 1870-1880 were using the same transfers for what we now call Meadow Visitors patterns with remarkable degree of freedom in combining and applying elements of various then-current patterns, resulting in endless variations on the theme and adding uniqueness to each hand-decorated piece. The set is in great antique condition with slight loss of gold on bottom cup rim and center of saucer.

  • Haviland Fleurs Parisiennes Tureen, 1887-1889
    By Haviland & Co.
    Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Up for your consideration is a hand painted and hand decorated small tureen by Haviland in the Fleurs Parisiennes pattern on Cannele blank, measuring 3.1" and 8.5" with 5.4" opening. The back-marks on the bottom are H&C*/Depose underglaze mark, dating back to 1887, and the circular Haviland Limoges decorator/overglaze mark (mark g, according to Haviland's Collectors International Foundation reference sheet) in brown (color indicates premium decor pieces on Haviland porcelain made in that period), dating back to 1879-1889. Cannele blank ("fluted"), influenced by traditional Japanese bowl shape called "kaki" or "chrysanthemum", was one of the new blanks created in 1880-1890s by Haviland's artists at the peak of Japonisme movement, after European artists and artisans become exposed to Japanese art. Cannele was hugely popular at the time and won the Grand Prix of 1889 Paris's World Fair. The Fleurs Parisiennes is one of the less common Haviland patterns...
