Jeweled Tree Vase. Wedgwood, circa 1980

About the Item

Fabulous baluster-shaped vase decorated with Jewelled Tree pattern. Panels to the sides depicting "Cat and Mouse" and "Copper Trees". From the late 20th century lustre revival. Probably the best of Wedgwood's female designers, Daisy was an eccentric character, who pushed her way into a world dominated by men, and created a new style of decoration. She was fascinated by the newly developed liquid lustre glazes, and used them to create lustreware, and then Fairyland. She combined images from various sources to create her own unique style. Wedgwood was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time she started her work, and this new, exciting style suddently catapulted Wedgwood into the position of the most popular manufacturer in the country. Other companies rushed to develop their own versions, but no-one managed to come close to the design, or the quality of production. For some ten years, Daisy headed the lustreware decoration department, overseeing the workshop in which the paintresses (as they were called) turned her designs into reality. The depression saw and end to demand for high-priced decorative items, and so ended the short period of production. The manufacture of Fairyland Lustre was revived at Wedgwood for a short period towards the end of the 20th century.

Currently on loan to The David Roche Foundation for their exhibition "Josiah Wedgwood - Master Potter to the Universe". Daisy Makeig Jones’ description relates this to Völuspá, a poem from the Poetic Edda, which is a collection of Old Norse poems. In Völuspá, it is said that the dwarves were created by the god Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and that they were condemned to live underground. The Light Elves are also mentioned in the poem as being allowed to live in the realm of Alfheim, which is a place of beauty and light. In Norse mythology...
