About the Item

Late 19th century biscuit? porcelain? figurine featuring Rebecca with her jar, near a well. Rebecca appears in the Hebrew Bible as the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau. She is often represented near a well, where she meets Abraham's servant, who was charged to select a bride for Isaac, his master's son. Our biscuit is signed "Cherc" on the base. It was manufactured by Goldscheider. Marked "SCULPTURE [...] Goldscheider [...]". Stamped "REPRODUCTION RÉSERVÉE" [Reproduction Reserved] and numbered 2171. Good condition. This model of Rebecca was also realized in terracotta. The Goldscheider? porcelain? manufactory was established by Friedrich Goldscheider (1845-1897) in Vienna in 1885. The factory produced various ceramics, from ordinary faience vessel to luxurious? porcelain? objects. However, it is its polychrome terracotta sculptures that made its reputation as the polychrome followed the naturalistic approach of the sculpture in Austria. Friedrich exposed its terracotta objects throughout Europe. He participated at the Leipzig Fair in 1887, at the Barcelona World Fair in 1888 and, a year later, at the Paris World Fair. The following years, Friedrich Goldscheider presented its creations at all major events, including Paris Salon. His figures and vases were widely appreciated and several firms were established in Germany, France, England and the United States. In 1892, a subsidiary for the production of bronze is created in Paris, 45 Rue de Paradis and, in 1896, a store is opened 28 Avenue de l'Opera. After Friedrich Goldscheider’s death in 1897, his wife Regina and his brother Alois took the firm over. The production of figures continued and one started under the influence of Art Nouveau to make sculptural vases. In 1953, following the financial difficulties, the firm was shut down.
