Meissen gorgeous figurine group: Allegory of music, first models created by Michel Victor Acier (third quarter of 18th century) Manufactory: Meissen Hallmarked: Blue Meissen Sword Mark (underglazed) models created by Michel Victor Acier / circa 1774-1775 First quality Dating: made circa 1870 Material: porcelain, glossy finish, multicolored painted Technique: handmade porcelain Model number n 11 / former's number 28 Measures: height 12.40 inches width 7.87 inches depth 6.29 inches Modeller: Michel Victor Acier (1736-1799) The sculptor was born at Versailles / France. He had studied Art of Sculpture in Paris and was appointed as sculptor of Meissen Porcelain Manufactory then (1762). Acier created many models in style of Rococo generally and in Watteau style specially. Finally, the sculptor became Model Master of the Saxon King in year 1780, moving to Dresden then. The model N 11 is based on models created in period 1774-75 on behalf of Czarina Catherine the great of Russia. Subject: Allegory of music Detailed description: This figurines group's kernel is the obelisk framed by rock as well as by clouds, around which three semi-nude cherubs are situated: A cherub sits in front of base of mentioned obelisk, it is writing by quill into a book balanced on cherub's left thigh The second cherub floats on clouds, playing trombone The third cherub stands beside base of obelisk, holding a lyre The figurines are based on semi-circular support covered with clouds as well as with rock. Please note: This figurine group is destined for arrangement in front of a wall like a table clock since this item has clearly a backside (the semi-circular base is straight at backside / please look at concerning pictures added here). This model N 11 is a variant of the first model 'Allegory of Music' once created by M.V.Acier on behalf of Czarina Catherine the Great of Russia (1729-1796) for equipment of so-said ' Pavillon (Pavilion) an den Rodelbergen in Lomonossow ' (formerly Oranienbaum) near St. Petersburg (Russia). This first model doesn't show the obelisk whereas it appears on a figurine group 'Allegory of Poetry' which had been created by Acier, too, for Catherine the Great of Russia for equipment of Catherine’s Castle in Lomonossow: Model N 11, a slight later pull presented here, is obviously a result of mixture of various details of both mentioned figurine groups – simultaneously with this fact we have to state that it is very similar to 'Allegory of Poetry', but due to cherubs' activities it has to be called 'Allegory of Music'.
