About the Item

Meissen Porcelain dinner plate, in the Kaikemon palette (a style of decoration developed in the 17th century by the artist Kaikemon during the Japanese Arita period). 12 lobed, petal shaped ridge plate edged in gilding. The pattern at the rim is the 'Neuer Ausschnitt', lit. 'new cut edge, in evidence from 1745. The decoration here, entitled 'The Three Friends' is a copy of the Japanese original. It features two birds, one in flight and one perched on a branch, with the bamboo plant and the apple green decoration (seen also in the green ground of Meissen cups at a similar time). Hakenjos pp 164-165 plate 129, a dish decorated with the three friends pattern. Note is made of a similar design in the Ralph Wark collection, The Cummer Gallery of Art, Jacksonville, Florida. Gillmeister p 64 plate, circa 1740 where the flying bird is of similar form to the bird perched on the branch and the plate is edged in brown. The press numb er is also 16. This example was exhibited at the museum fuer Kunst and Gewerbe, Hamburg between 1999-2009.
