A pair of Coalport Cache Pots decorated by Thomas Baxter c.1802 - 1805

About the Item

A rare pair of Coalport porcelain cache pots c.1802-1805. Each cache pot, painted in the London studio of Thomas Baxter most probably by Thomas Baxter junior, ‘en grisaille’ with classical scenes depicting Ariadne abandoned by Theseus and Orpheus attracting the animals, reserved on a deep chocolate ground with panels of classical inspired scenes, gilt decoration including a Greek key motif around the central panel to the front. The reverse with a solid chocolate ground and scrolling foliage and palmettes in gold. Note that Thomas Baxter wrote and illustrated a book titled 'Egyptian, Grecian, and Roman Costume; in forty outlines, with descriptions, selected, drawn & engraved, by Thomas Baxter', London: 1810. Baxter was clearly influenced by the work of Thomas Hope. Condition: Professional re-gilding to areas on both and some re-touching to some flakes of the ground colour and central panel on one.
