Pair of Octagonal Chinese Porcelain Plates

About the Item

This pair of octagonal plates for export features refined polychrome decoration of Chinese origin, dating back to the export period of the Qing period (18th century). The decor is executed in cobalt blue and reddish-orange, with gold details, creating an elegant and harmonious contrast widely appreciated in both the East and the West. The use of these colors is characteristic of porcelain known as "famille verte" and "famille rose", often destined for the European market. The central scene on the plates depicts an idyllic and serene landscape, typical of Chinese iconography, representing a setting on the banks of a river. In the foreground, there is a traditional house or pavilion with a detailed roof, surrounded by trees and flowers, suggesting a bucolic and harmonious setting. On the river, small boats sail calmly, while gently smoky mountains make up the background, creating a sense of depth and tranquility. The rim of the plates is decorated with almost geometric patterns, interspersed with floral elements. Flower and leaf motifs in shades of red and pink intertwine with stylized scale and ribbon patterns, creating a rich and detailed frame. Small dots and lines in blue reinforce the delicacy of the decoration, highlighting the precision and skill of the artisans of the time. The symmetry between the plates suggests that they were designed as a complementary pair, following the tradition of Chinese export porcelain, which produced sets for collectors and European aristocratic families. During the 17th and 18th centuries, pieces like these were highly valued and were frequently commissioned by merchants from the Dutch East India Company. In addition to their utilitarian function, these dishes represent an artistic and cultural expression, combining Chinese aesthetic tradition with the Western demand for sophisticated and exotic pieces. Their meticulous decoration and the symbolism associated with nature and serenity make them not only decorative objects, but also historical testimonies of commercial and artistic exchange between civilizations. Minimal failures.
