A Porcelain European Jewish Fur Trader Figurine, Late 19th Century

About the Item

A Porcelain European Jewish fur trader figurine from the late 19th century is a culturally significant artifact, reflecting the artistic and social representations of Jewish life during that period. In the late 19th century, Jewish communities in Europe were diverse and engaged in various trades and professions. Fur trading was a notable occupation among Jewish merchants in Eastern and Central Europe, contributing to the economic life and cultural diversity of urban centers. This figurine of a Jewish fur trader captures the distinctive cultural and occupational attributes through the nuances of clothing, facial expressions, and gestures. Colorfully painted and crafted with meticulous detail and skill, the figurine depicts a Jewish peddler in traditional attire with fox fur draped over his arm while the other arm waves to passersby. Collectible Value: Antique porcelain figurines from the late 19th century, especially those depicting specific ethnic or occupational identities like a Jewish fur trader, are highly collectible. They are valued for their craftsmanship, historical context, and portrayal of cultural diversity within European society. The Maker mark; the letter 'N' with a crown is painted in blue at the bottom.

A Bronze Figurine of Three Jewish Men in Conversation, Austria late 19th Century
Located in New York, NY
A Small bronze figurine of two Jewish men with several stereotypical physical features commonly attributed to Jewish men: large noses, sidelocks, and beards. They are wearing caftans (kaftans) belted by wide sashes at the waist. A caftan is a long-sleeved, ankle-length coat with an open-cut at the front. Many Eastern Polish and Western Russian Jews began wearing caftans fastened with wide, oriental-style sashes in the late medieval period. The garb later spread to Central Europe, but in place of the sash, a cord was used to close the front of the garment instead. These garments were often worn by peddlers and itinerant vendors who traveled the countryside and sold goods to the public. However, old prejudices stemming from the economic and professional restrictions placed on early European Jews, along with Christians’ disdain for the professions Jews were allowed to practice, formed an antisemitic stereotype of the greedy Jew who exploited Gentiles. This canard was often visually depicted as a Jewish peddler...
