About the Item

This unique contemporary one-of-a-kind Japanese vase, hand-painted on a stunningly shaped massive ovoid shape porcelain, is a masterpiece by Sho-un, a highly acclaimed award-winning master porcelain artist in Japan’s Arita-Imari tradition. The attractive ovoid vase, signed by the artist, features intricate polychrome overglaze enameling that extends all the way up the tapered neck set against billowing waves expressed using in blue underglaze. With the approaching cherry blossom season in Japan, we are pleased to present a series of decorative vases and chargers featuring cherry blossoms – Japan’s national flower. Cherry blossoms represent spring, the time of renewal, and are a reminder of the fleeting nature of life. In the ancient springtime rite of hanami (flower viewing) that continues to this day, crowds congregate under cherry trees in full bloom to eat, drink, sing and celebrate life under a canopy of blossoms that all know will last but a few days. Particularly poignant is the tradition of nighttime flower viewing (yozakura) where the encroaching darkness adds to the urgency of “gather ye rosebuds while ye may.” In his ode to cherry blossoms, Matsuo Basho, the 17th century haiku poet, laments the impermanence of life. The winner of numerous prestigious awards, the artist calls his style “Sho-un style,” a refreshing interpretation of traditional polychrome enamels combined with blue underglaze to create an inspiring landscape on porcelain. His painstaking “drip painting technique” is designed to bring subtly textured feel to his flowers expressed in bold vibrant colors. The upper half of the vase depicts cherry blossoms in full bloom with carefree birds in midflight. This is contrasted against the angry waves covering the lower reaches of the vase. Stirred up by the gusting winds of spring, the waves are seen swallowing the fallen blossoms a reference to the frailty of cherry blossoms, a traditional Japanese metaphor for the ephemerality of life. This vase comes in a custom-made wooden box signed by the artist.
