About the Item
Royal Worcester Exhibition Vase with Dolphin Handle, Mask Heads & Cherubs – 1884
An exceptional Royal Worcester porcelain exhibition vase, dated 1884, retailed by the distinguished firm A.B. Daniell & Son of Wigmore Street, London. This rare and sculptural piece exemplifies the height of late 19th-century English porcelain design.
The vase features a dramatic fixed handle formed as entwined dolphins, a motif drawn from classical antiquity. On either side, applied mask heads—likely representing river gods—emerge from beneath sweeping acanthus leaves. The body is adorned with two oval bas-relief medallions depicting playful cherubs, surrounded by finely modeled gilt scrollwork and laurel motifs.
Executed in ivory-toned porcelain with crisp moulding, the vase is richly embellished with hand-applied gilding and delicate red enamel accents. The piece stands on a fluted circular foot, also highlighted in gold.
