About the Item

A stunning and rare antique Royal Worcester reticulated cup and saucer decorated with beadwork and painted designs by renowned and sought after potter George Owen (British, 1845-1912) and dated 1881. George Owen refined and produced reticulated double-walled vessel at Royal Worcester and today these are highly regarded and collected worldwide. These pieces took months of painstaking work to produce, and failure rates were apparently high. The outer wall of each piece was carefully pierced to form a honeycomb effect on the external body. The pieces were very delicately made and often finely embellished with color, hand painted elements and rich gilding. This very finely made example is a wonderful survivor considering its size and delicacy. Made from porcelain The cup is of wide round form with the pierced edge extending to the base to form the narrow round foot rim. The bowl is an off-white color, and the pierced sides of the cup are separated with panels exquisitely decorated with fine gilded stipple landscape designs. With decorative beaded borders top and bottom the pierced sections are decorated with central floret style designs picked out in gold and red and with the pierced element colored in light blue and applied with small, gilded stipple patterning. A twig form handle is applied to the side. The saucer is similarly patterned with reticulated panels to the rim and both pieces have printed Worcester marks with date letters S dating the set to 1881. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market. In excellent original condition with light wear associated with age and use.
