About the Item

A very fine French Chinese Qianlong (18th century) style porcelain teacaddy and cover attributed to Samson of Paris and dating from the 19th century. The tea caddy is beautifully made and of an unusual three sided triangular shape hand decorated to each side with a typical Chinese scene of water birds on a rocky outcrop painted in tones of black and red and set within a blue and gilded border. The caddy has finely decorated patterning around the lower and top edge and around the neck and repeated on the rounded cover. The caddy has an unglazed foot ground to imitate the Chinese wares and probably had a red pseudo Chinese mark to the base which has been ground away with slight remnants of the red mark still showing. These later copies were so good that they are often passed off as original Chinese examples. In very fine condition with ground down mark.
