About the Item

Etruria, Staffordshire, c. 1790, octagonal wafer-thin white jasper with green jasper dip framing, lilac ground boarder with white jasper floral meander, central decoration with blue dip ground, white sprigging depicting Sacrifice to Eros and Sale of Eros, beveled and lapidary-polished edges, impressed "WEDGWOOD" verso, 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 in., Ex. Lindsay Grigsby; Drs. Harold & Caroline Brown; partial label for Pereira Collection. Together with a modern marquetry frame for display, 8 x 6 in. In her "Classical Wedgwood Design" (1958) Dr. Carol Macht identifies the source for Sale of Eros to be a wall painting from Stabia now in the museum at Naples, Italy. An identical example is published on page 122 of Michael Herman's "Wedgwood Jasper: Classics, Rarities, & Oddities from Four Centuries" (2007).

A jasper medallion decorated with Aphrodite, set in cut steel as a buckle, probably by Matthew Boulton. Original box. The Greek goddess Aphrodite is often depicted in ancient art with a dolphin. In mythology, dolphins were considered sacred to Aphrodite, and they were associated with love, beauty, and fertility. According to one legend, Aphrodite emerged from the sea on a shell-borne chariot drawn by dolphins, and the creatures were said to be her faithful servants. As a result, images of Aphrodite with dolphins became a popular motif in Greek art, appearing on vases, sculptures, and other decorative objects.
