19th C. Glazed Pouring Jug from Dordogne Region of France

About the Item

A very pretty petite glazed jug originating from the Dordogne region of south-west France and dating from the 19th century. Originally conceived for the storage and preservation of nut oils in a country kitchen, it may also have been used to store and serve cool drinking water. Featuring three beautifully shaped carrying handles and a handcrafted shaped pouring spout, it has been glazed almost to the base in a wonderful hues of caramel and dusky green. The glazed finish shows some signs of wear, with scuffs and chips in evidence throughout. However, the jar is full of character, and any flaws should be seen as testament to its utilitarian history and centuries' old daily usage. This would be a fabulous and rather unique vessel in which to display fresh or dried flowers.
