About the Item

In Royal Blue dip; a colour normally reserved for Coronation commemoratives. One of only fifty made; made to mark the bicentenary of the foundation of the colony at Botany Bay. The bowl features portraits of Captain James Cook and Commodore Arthur Phillip; the former claimed the land, the latter commanded the First Fleet and became governor of the new colony. The founding of the colony at Botany Bay in Australia was a key event in the history of European settlement in Australia. The colony was established by the British government in 1788, with the goal of establishing a penal colony to alleviate overcrowding in British prisons. In 1770, Captain James Cook claimed the east coast of Australia for Britain, and in 1778, the British established a penal colony at Sydney Cove. However, the colony struggled due to overcrowding and a lack of resources, and in 1786, the British government decided to establish a new penal colony at Botany Bay. In May 1787, the First Fleet, consisting of 11 ships carrying around 1,500 people, including convicts, soldiers, and free settlers, set sail from England for Australia. The fleet was under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, who was appointed as the first governor of the new colony. The journey to Australia was long and difficult, with many of the convicts and sailors suffering from disease and malnutrition. The fleet arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788, but found that the area was unsuitable for settlement due to poor soil and a lack of fresh water. After exploring the area, Phillip decided to establish the colony at Sydney Cove, which he believed was a more suitable location. The colony was officially established on January 26, 1788, and this date is now celebrated as Australia Day.

Trophy Plate, Wedgwood, circa 1900
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Trophy plates were a particularly Victorian development at Wedgwood, taking the use of classical ornament to its absolute limit. Over 2,000 individual sprigs were made, applied, and undercut to produce this plate. Only the best decorators made these, beginning with Thomas Lovatt in the late 19th century - this is an example of his work. The central relief depicts Bellerophon with Pegasus. Bellerophon was a noble hero of Corinth, known for his strength and bravery. He was the son of Glaucus and the grandson of Sisyphus, though some myths suggest he was actually the son of Poseidon. Bellerophon was a skilled warrior and sought to accomplish great deeds. Pegasus was a magnificent, winged horse born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa...
