About the Item

A rare and early tenmoku glazed handcrafted Studio Pottery coffee pot by renowned English potter Bernard Leach CBE (British, 1887-1979) and made at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall in the first half of the 20th Century. The stoneware pot stands on a flat unglazed base and is round bulbous form with a wide funnel neck with a round flat folded rim and with a shaped pouring spout attached to the side of the neck with shaped cut out to the body of the coffee pot. A wide flat shaped pouring handle is applied to the opposite side. A recessed cover sits within the unglazed lip to the top. The coffee pot has simple incised vertical linear patterning applied around the body and is decorated in brown tenmoku glazes. The coffee pot has an impressed Leach Pottery mark along with an impressed BL seal mark and marked ENGLAND to the lower edge below the handle. Provenance: Acquired from the estate of Richard Batterham who acquired the vase directly from Bernard Leach. Thence consigned by a gentleman owner and collector. The body of the coffee pot is in good condition with glaze having run down and formed a droplet underneath the base and causing a slight wobble. While this could be ground down it is a natural and original characteristic in the making. The cover has suffered extensive damage and is crudely glued with missing elements and with one piece loose. It could be easily restored however sitting within the top recess does not detract from the appearance of the coffee pot.
