Pair of Egyptian Sphinxes in Rosso with Black, Wedgwood, circa 1820

About the Item

A pair of winged, seated sphinxes in rosso with black decoration. Exhibited: Wedgwood, Master Potter to the Universe, Roche Foundation, 2023. The Egyptian winged sphinx is a variation of the traditional sphinx, combining the body of a lion with the wings of a bird. While the Great Sphinx of Giza is perhaps the most famous example of a traditional sphinx, winged sphinxes were also prominent in ancient Egyptian art and architecture. Like the traditional sphinx, the winged sphinx was considered a protective guardian. It represented strength, wisdom, and watchfulness, and was often associated with the protection of sacred places, such as temples and tombs. The winged sphinx is a composite creature, blending elements of both lions and birds. The lion represents strength and power, while the wings symbolize speed, agility, and the ability to transcend earthly matters. One of the most notable examples of winged sphinxes can be found at the Temple of Karnak in Luxor, Egypt. These sphinxes line the processional way leading to the temple and are known as "sphinx avenues." They were used to guard the sacred path.

  • Portland Vase, Northwood, Wedgwood, circa 1880
    By Wedgwood
    Located in Melbourne, Victoria
One of the finest copies of The Portland Vase that Wedgwood produced, in many ways rivalling the First Edition itself. Decorated by Thomas Lovatt, then cut, polished and shaded by John Northwood in his glass engraving studio. Although 30 copies were intended, the work was so exacting and arduous that in the end only thirteen were finished. The mirrored stand, which is included, is later and I think dates from the late 20th century. Of all the stands designed for the Portland Vase, this is the best I've seen. The original Portland vase, dating from around 200AD and made of cameo glass, is considered one of the most important examples of classical design and is noted for its intricate relief sculptures, which depict classical figures and scenes from Greek mythology - exactly what, though, we're not sure. The original Wedgwood Portland Vase...

  • Very Rare Mason's Ironstone Bottle Vase in Chinese Dragon Pattern, circa 1820
    By Mason's Ironstone
    Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very rare ironstone vase, in the Chinese style, all hand painted in the coloured dragon pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century. Both the vase shape and the pattern are very rare. The vase has a bottle shape with a fairly tall neck, having two dolphin head handles, with attached loops. (NOTES ON SHAPE This vase style is a copy of a much earlier Chinese bronze vase shape produced in the Ming, Hongwu period of 1368 - 1398, which had similar decorative animal head side handles with loops. ( See the book Chinese Ceramics by He Li, page 216, published by Thames & Hudson. ). Also On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204; The square handles and rings illustrate the metal origins of the shape of the vase. Similar examples have been excavated in Chinese tombs dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth century, suggesting that the shape was particularly popular at that time.) This vase is beautifully hand decorated in a more complex variant of the Coloured Chinese Dragon pattern, with strong coloured enamels depicting a green dragon on one side and a pink dragon...
