Fine Antique Meissen Porcelain Blue Onion Pattern 2 Lobed Serving Dish

About the Item

Very fine, elegant antique handmade and hand painted Meissen porcelain, 2 lobed scalloped serving dish with rocaille handle in the "Blue Onion" pattern. In perfect condition. The blue onion pattern was designed in 1739 and has been in production ever since. The so-called "onions" are not onions. The pattern is thought to originate from Chinese peaches and pomegranates and was originally called the "Bulb" pattern. The Meissen painters created hybrids that resembled flora more familiar to Europeans. The whole design is a grouping of several floral motifs with stylized peonies and asters in the pattern's center, the stems of which wind in flowing curves around a bamboo stalk. While the design most likely originated from a Chinese model, it also demonstrates that the manner of strictly abstract style has a European influence. It is connected with the rhythm and rules of rococo ornamentation. The asymmetrical motif is composed according to type in various areas, and yet at first glance gives the impression of symmetry. The blue onion pattern was designed as a white ware decorated with cobalt blue under glaze pattern. Measures approximately 9.5 inches long by 11.5" wide by 1.75" deep inside the server. The height with the handle included is approximately 4.75" tall. Weighs approximately 2.43 pounds. Meissen-made porcelain is considered the finest china in the world and Meissen is one of the most famous manufacturers. Meissen was the first European "hard paste" porcelain ever made. Developed in 1708, Meissen began production in 1710 near Dresden, Germany. The logo of the crossed swords was introduced in 1720 and the variations of this mark are used to determine the date of manufacture, the Meissen crossed swords logo is one of the oldest trademarks in existence.
