About the Item

This very well executed engraved crystal and silver plated claret jug is hallmarked by the renowned Elkington & Co. of England and dating to approximately 1880 in the period Victorian style. This claret jug has highly detailed cast and silver plated mounts around the top with high relief vignettes around the collar. The handle is nicely shaped and tastefully decorated with scrolls and leaves. The top and spout are also decorated in a similar manner with a beaded surround. Most notably, the body of the jug is engraved with a large Heron or standing shore bird standing in a pond surrounded by bull rushes or cattails which cover the remaining area of the jug and accent the handle. The jug sits on a small silver plated pedestal base. The jug is hallmarked on the collar for Elkington & Co.
