Elkington & Co Silver Plated Dolphin & Shell Salt Cellar with Silver Gilt lining

About the Item

A stunning Elkington & Co, 19th century silver plated and silver gilt Dolphin & Clam Shell Open Salt cellar Dating to the latter part of the 19th century. This is a really fine example of an elaborate, also a scarce form of a Maltese dolphin supporting a shell on a seabed of waves base. Cast in 3 separate parts joined together from the base which is Stamped E & Co for Elkington weighing 374g/ 13.19Oz This is a first quality sculpture, fine deep cast details sharply observed, keenly executed by a true craftsman. (there have been other similar models produced over the years, but they do not tend to have such high detail and quality). Condition: Very good for its age, no damage and no loss of plating, the depth of plate appears to be superior. The addition of gold plating to the inside of the clam shell all underline the highest quality product one that has survived nearly 150 years in lovely condition. The gilt lining is the only real sign of age, a little worn around the edges and tarnished by natural salt - but this could easily be replated if required - we have made no restorations, this is exactly as it was made so many decades ago. We have not overly cleaned this item so there are some dark patches in the deepest parts of the castings that could be cleaned with professional silver cleaning products and a small headed brush/ tooth brush - be we feel this is the choice of the buyer We have tried to photograph it to the best of our ability but if you need any more details shots, please just ask and we will upload as required

Antique silver plated creamer by Elkington & Co, England, 1880s
By Elkington & Co.
Located in Miklavž Pri Taboru, SI
Antique silver plated creamer by Elkington & Co made in the United Kingdom in the 1880s. Elkington & Co are one of the most important names in English Silver and Silver Plate. Elkington started in Birmingham in 1836, and experimented with innovative gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another. By 1840 production was already underway with silver electroplated wares. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 (renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1861) and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success. Elkington held Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI. The Elkington & Co. name is still in use today as manufacturers under the auspices of British Silverware Ltd. The antique creamer...
