About the Item

An exceptional, fine, and impressive, antique 18th century Dutch silver pipe tamper tool / tongue scraper; an addition to our smoking related silverware collection This exceptional antique Dutch silver pipe tamper tool has a faceted handpiece with a tongue scraper to the terminal. The handpiece is embellished with cast and applied festoon decoration to either side, in addition to an engraved decoration. The plain oval antique tongue scraper* is ornamented to the nadir with four scrolling designs, in conjunction with the stem/handpiece. This exceptional example of antique silverware incorporates four tamper/pipe blades, secured to one end via an integrated hinge, and once closed can be concealed within the stem. * Tongue scrapers were popularised across Europe in the mid-ninteeth century and were influenced by the Asian oral care practice.
