Antique George V Sterling Silver Holy Water Font

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare, antique English sterling silver holy water font; an addition to our religious silverware collection. This exceptional antique George V English sterling silver holy water font has a rectangular shaped form. The rectangular panel is embellished with an engraved cross segmenting the initials 'AMDG'; this represents the Latin wording 'ad maiorem Dei gloriam' which translates to English as 'To the greater glory of God'*. This base plate is further ornamented with an embossed stylised bud festoon style border. The nadir of the font incorporates an impressive semi-circular rounded silver bowl/font, accented with a pendant drop to the lower portion. This wall-mounted holy water font suspends via a plain ring loop to the upper portion. The reverse of the font bears the retailer's mark 'Harman, 177 New Bond St W, London'. Such examples of holy water fonts are rare to the market. * This phrase is often considered to be the Jesuit motto as it was a favourite expression of St. Ignatius, however this is not an exclusive conclusion to its use. Condition This antique silver holy water font with cross is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full British hallmarks struck to the surface of the wallplate are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique ecclesiastical silverware.
