About the Item

We are delighted to have acquired and offer this magnificent set of six salt cellars made by S & C Younge & Co in Sheffield, 1814/16 (4 and 2 identical from two years later). The set presents a spectacular Regency design, drawing inspiration from ancient civilisations and archaeological discoveries such as Egypt, featuring four winged lion-paw feet supporting the top section. The bowls are exceptionally ornate and well decorated with a curved gadroon border accented with anthemion motifs. What cannot be accurately conveyed through photos is their weight and gauge of silver - it is made from an exceptionally thick and heavy gauge of silver and weighs 880 grams total. As further testament to its quality and craftsmanship, the bowls are not simply circular/rectangular but feature a unique cartouche-like design which not only elevates their splendour but also displays how much time and effort would have gone into shaping each piece, whereas in a more normal set, a common or simple design would have sufficed and have been employed. Delightful as it already is to find a set of 6 intact throughout the ages, additionally, these salts have remained in great order and their original gilding remains with a beautiful antique yellow/lemon gold gilt tone. The gilding not only provides a lovely contrast to the silver tone but also serves a practical purpose in protecting the silver from reacting with the salt that would be placed within. Owing to their practical form and being a set of six, these salts not only offer a wonderful aesthetic in an interior setting but could be used practically in the modern day with some creative uses. Whether it be for plenty of salt at a dinner party or as a rotating sauce/condiment selection for the dinner table, we believe such pieces present a versatile offering in addition to their splendour. Some further creative ideas may include: single sorbet servings, caviar dish, jewellery storage, small confectionary servings. Overall, a splendid set of salts ideal to elevate any interior dining setting or for discerning collectors who wish to add a distinguished set to their display. A full set of English hallmarks is present on the bottom of each bowl. *Please note: all images with other items are for display purposes only, this listing is for the item mentioned in the title. Size Size (cm) L:10.5cm W:8.3cm H:5cm Size (inches) L:4.13 W:3.26 H:1.96 Weight: 880 grams (28.29 Troy oz) total. Condition Great Condition - The salts are in great antique condition with no issues or damage. Some surface wear commensurate with age and some gilding fade on high points. One of the salts rock slightly when placed and pushed on a flat surface. We aim to overemphasise and state these issues to avoid disappointment and thus please rest assured they are not significant nor affect the usage of the items. Please refer to the photographs to examine the condition in further detail. Free Shipping Artisan Antiques offers free global shipping with professional, secure and discreet packaging.
