About the Item
We are delighted to offer this spectacular sculptural and naturalistic solid silver Victorian sauce boat made in London in 1881 with marks for James Barclay Hennell.
This sauce boat features a unique and remarkable combination of minimalistic 'plain' silver and ornately embellished naturalistic accents which create a wonderful artistic juxtaposition and a distinct aesthetic effect.
The entire sauce boat is made from a very thick gauge of silver weighing over half a kilo in spite of its relatively hollow design. This can be further appreciated when handling in person whereby the hefty weight certainly has a feel of exceeding quality.
Each additional part such as the handle and feet is applied cast silver with naturalistic motifs and designs of acorns, leaves and branches. The realistic and sculptural design is made in a way as if inviting the onlooker to view the object from all angles and appreciate its impressive degree of intricacy and design.
What is particularly unique in addition to the above is the hand-chased border of acorn motifs around the top edge of the boat (whilst this may usually be left unembellished or gadrooned, it is quite rare to see such an ornate example). This seemingly insignificant yet laborious embellishment clearly displays the opulence and 'no cost cut' attitude for the creation of this piece.
Both sides of the sauce boat are hand engraved with a monogram and two crests with a Baron's coronet.
A wonderful collectable yet practical piece of naturalistic Victorian silverware, ideal for collectors of unique sauceboats or as a splendid addition to your dining table for an indulgent setting and dining experience.
A full set of English hallmarks is present on the base.

View AllAntique Georgian Sterling Silver Basket/Bowl Rococo Shell - Robert Garrard 1804
Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this magnificent Georgian solid silver basket made in London, 1804 by the acclaimed Royal gold/silversmith, Garrard (marks for Robert Garrard).
Garrard (founded in 1735, surviving the test of time, still producing fine silverware and jewellery today), throughout history has been serving and producing exceptional pieces of silver and jewellery for the British Royal Family.
The firm was appointed Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843 which may come as no surprise upon examining the exceptional quality, craftsmanship and designs of their silverware/jewellery.
It may come as no surprise that this George III basket presents some of the most desirable and impressive characteristics and embellishments. The basket is made in the manner of George II Rococo design and features ornate scrolled edges, rococo shells and intricate piercings.
It is made from a wonderfully sturdy and thick gauge, resulting in the basket weighing just a touch over 1.4kg in spite of its relatively hollow and pierced design. This can be further appreciated when handling in person whereby the hefty weight is supported by the thick handle, presenting a reassuring feel of exceeding quality.
The balance between asymmetric scrolls and the overall proportions of this basket is majestic and the intricate repeated piercings of crosses and anthemion motifs allow for light to shine through, further elevating its splendour on a table or display.
Such baskets would have been originally owned and used by the upper echelons of society including the aristocracy and wealthy families acting as both a practical and symbolic dining accoutrament of prosperity. This basket has a central coat of arms hand engraved.
We believe that even today, such baskets are still highly versatile and wonderful objects of decoration and practicality whether be it in an antique setting or a juxtaposing centrepiece in a modern interior. Owing to it generous size and elaborate design, it could be used to serve bread or cake in a party setting or perhaps hold some fruit on your dining table in the most opulent manner.
Overall, an impressive and ornate example of fine Georgian silverware, ideal for immediately elevating the ambience of a setting and adding a magnificent silvery presence to your interior.
A full set of English hallmarks is present on the base - the handle of the basket is unmarked.

Good Condition - The basket is in good overall antique condition considering its age and type. There are some areas of old restoration with one pierced section having been repaired and some slight splits around the feet of the basket. Due to its ornate design, this is not very apparent or visible however we have mentioned it for accuracy. Areas with the most significant restoration have been shown in the last image.
