English Sterling Silver 18th Century Desk Sander Hallmarked:-London, 1733

About the Item

English sterling silver desk sander Made and used 289 years ago. Full English hallmarks for London 1733. With the maker`s mark - I.S for Joseph Smith I, who`s mark was registered with the London Assay Office in 1728. A delightful DESK SANDER, still in very good condition. Ink of that period was relatively slow drying, and there was nothing like blotting paper. Clean sand was used, shaken all over the writing. When dry, it would be tipped into a container and returned to the sander. The top pushes on to the base, and fits very securely. The only fault is where two of the lid piercings have run together - probably too close, when originally drilled. The wide stepped base has the hallmarks grouped in the centre. Just below the marks, towards the edge, are stamped the original owner`s initials - H over I * I. The silver is of quite thick gauge - it needed to be, to last so long without being dented. Measures: Height:- 88 millimetres / 3.46 inches. Weight:- 60.1 grams / 1.93 ounces.
