Sterling Silver Crab Tobacco Container, Hallmarked London 1902

About the Item

A wonderful silver container modelled as a crab that was originally made to carry tobacco. Made to a registered design with maker's mark for Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings Shepherd. Hallmarked London, 1902. Registered as a limited company in 1916 and continuing to the present day, Saunders, Shepherd & Co. were a hugely successful manufacturing jewellers and silversmiths founded in London in 1869. The letter F in the hallmark was struck on imported wares in addition to the marks shown from 1867-1904. Dimensions: 8.75cm/3⅜ inches (width) x 7.5cm/2⅞ (depth) x 2.50cm/1inch (height). Bentleys are Members of LAPADA, the London and Provincial Antique Dealers Association.
