About the Item

This is a plate made in the middle to late Edo period (1700-1850) in Japan. It is a plate baked in Seto, and is called "Ishi-zara" in Japan. Seto is a kiln with a long history in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. (Seto kilns are marked with red circles on the map.) It is said to have originated around the 13th century. The kiln is still in operation today. “Ishizara” is a heavy and thick plate made of glazed earthenware with a rough sketch of gosu and iron. Regarding the name "Ishi-Zara", first of all, the meaning of the word is "Ishi = Stone" and "Zara = Plate". It is said that the origin of the name is that it was made by imitating the shape of Korean stone pots and stone utensils, and that stone powder made by crushing feldspar was used for the glaze. During the Edo period, the population exploded and there was demand for tableware from all over the country. Therefore, Seto ware, which is a major ceramics area, produced a large number of vessels in order to meet the demand. And this "stone-dough" was also piled up and baked. That's why there are small evenly spaced marks in the center of the plate. There is always this mark when the dishes are layered and baked. There are various designs, but the willow-patterned “Ishi Zara” is especially popular among Japanese people. I draw a willow with a flowing touch. Simple and very beautiful. In addition, since a similar product was published in the art book, the photograph is posted as a reference material. Since these plates were used at the normal dining table, they were often broken, so there aren't many of them left. This must have been used with care, so there are small peeling and chipping marks on the edges (marked with red circles), but the state of preservation is relatively good. You can use this dish as usual without any problems. Please serve your favorite things such as pasta, curry, and salad. I also want to use it at home, but this time I will sell it at 1stdibs.
