Set of six British wildlife silver place card holders

About the Item

Set of six charming antique silver menu or place card holders depicting British birds and animals in their natural wildlife settings. The characters include a pheasant, gundog, hare, plover and woodcock. Each is beautifully hand pierced and engraved and the set is presented in its original fitted leather case. As a fine and traditional addition to fine dining, it was the Victorians who first introduced menu holders to our dining tables. Silver menu holders and place card holders were first created to hold a card displaying the menu and, rather than putting a place card holder and name in front of each diner as we often do today, silver menu holders were spread and passed around the dining table. For that reason, we most frequently find sets of four silver menu holders, or pairs. Larger sets of six and eight can be found, while ten or a dozen silver menu or place card holders are fairly rare. The main function of the bone is to provide strength between the neck and breast, to protect the creature during battle. The Ancient Romans perceived this bone as a symbol of luck which allowed the progression of breaking a dried chicken wishbone apart whilst making a wish; this procedure determined the person with the bigger half would receive their wish or have good fortune. This tradition has travelled through Europe and is an adopted practice in many countries. Condition These impressive antique menu holders...
