About the Item

This is a beautiful écuelle (broth bowl) with a stand and cover, made by a Paris factory in about 1820. The set has a white ground colour with blind moulding and beautiful hand painted birds and butterflies. This set has some restoration and is therefore sold "As Found" (A/F). There were many porcelain factories in early 19th Century Paris, and just as many decorating studios. Often items were made in a factory and then decorated in a studio, but most did not sign their works so we can't know who made this set. In the 18th and early 19th Century a lady of wealth and standing would spend a long time in the morning being dressed by her servants, and particularly the hair, which was heavily powderded, would take a long time. During this time the lady, still sleepy from a long night of parties (as that was her main occupation: to be seen and give standing to her husband), and probably quite hungover, would drink either a sweet hot chocolate or a bowl of strengthening broth. So that she wouldn't drop the cup in her unsteady state of sleepiness, it has two handles; and to protect it from hair powder and make up, it has a cover. This broth bowl has a stand and a cover and two handles. It is 'blind moulded" in simple white, with beautiful hand painted birds and butterflies. The item has had its use and has several restorations, however it still looks beautiful. All items are unmarked, as was common at the time. Condition Report The set has had several repairs: one of the handles has been broken and was professionally restored; and the gilt on the edges was touched up, which makes it not appropriate to drink from. There is some light crazing on the stand, but not the cup or the cover. These issues are shown in the pictures, please study them carefully, and they are reflected in the price. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Dimensions 15cm (6") diameter at widest point, 13.5cm (5.4") high; both measurements are including stand and cover.
