18th Century Swedish Decorated Mangle Board

About the Item

Folk art mangle board from northern Sweden. This is a typical proposal gift to the would-be bride from the groom. If he had the skill the groom would make it himself. Dated 1794 and monogrammed with the likely first owner’s initials. Untouched original condition. This type of mangle is an early versions and used by hand. The damp cloth would be rolled around a wooden cylinder and the mangle board used to roll and flatten the fabric on the table. The rich decorations indicated that the household was very wealthy. They could afford the amount of time and effort spent on making it. A mangle board is also supposed to be used in day to day work which means only very few could spend money on embellishments.
