Figure of Artemis Hunting

About the Item

This bronze statue of a woman is dynamic despite the missing leg and arm and the left side, and the missing foot on the right side. The woman appears to be running, her face determined, her gaze fierce. She is wearing a peplos secured by two round fibulae on the shoulders. Made by a large rectangular garment hung from the shoulders, this traditional attire creates an elegantly draped overfold on the chest and was commonly worn by Greek woman in Ancient Greece. The garment emphasises the illusion of speed and movement, as the draped fabric flows behind her, contrasting with the smooth texture of the garment on her thighs.Her hair is worn in a Hellenistic fashion called the ‘melon’ style: the wavy hair has been parted into equal sections, twisted and pulled back, then gathered at the back of her head. Style also seen in the Late Classical sculpture known as Piraeus Artemis A, currently with the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, Athens. With her hair pulled back from her face, the main focus in on her striking features. She is looking straight ahead, brow furrowed, lips tight.Her stance, hairstyle and facial expression all indicate Artemis, the Greek goddess of Hunting. Artemis is most portrayed in ancient Greek art hunting, reaching for an arrow or carrying a spear, and often with a stag or a hunting dog. One of the most famous example of Artemis hunting is the marble statue known as Diane de Versailles, Louvre Museum, Paris. In our example, she might have been holding a weapon or reaching for her quiver with her left arm, now lost. The size of the figure indicate that it may originally have been a domestic decoration or a votive deposit in a shrine.

Ancient Marble Portrait Bust of a Bearded Man possibly Lucius Verus

This impressive bust is depicted with head turned slightly to the right and gaze lifted. His eyes are articulated, with the pupils indicated with a drill, giving the face a striking realism. The shoulders are draped with a cloak. Straight brows sit beneath a mass of thickly curling hair, which continues to a full beard. It is worked with great skill, evident in the heavy drill work articulating and highlighting the voluminous curls, and the highly polished surfaces, giving the appearance of soft skin. The contrast between these textures gives a chiaroscuro affect which is one of the main traits of the best Antonine busts. Roman marble portraits reached their apotheosis of craftmanship and technique under the Antonine emperors, as is evidenced in this masterful bust. The evolution of the style may be traced back to the emperor Hadrian, who was the first emperor to wear a full beard. The articulation of pupils and iris appears on busts of his lover Antinous, a novelty which continued in later Antonine portraits, such as this one.
