About the Item
A wonderfully designed and glazed Japanese Mingei style Chawan tea ceremony bowl with ears by esteemed American born/ British potter Janet Leach, wife of famed master ceramicist Bernard Leach (the Father of British Studio Pottery and founder of Leach Pottery/ St. Ives).
Janet Leach studied at Black Mountain College in North Carolina under Shoji Hamada (perhaps Japan's greatest potter), a visiting artisan/instructor. Afterward, she traveled to Japan to work with him directly where she studied with him for two additional years. Leach always considered Shoji Hamada to be her principal mentor. She was the first foreign woman to study pottery in Japan and only the second westerner. Hamada's influence can clearly be seen in this particular piece.
After returning to the US from Japan, in 1955 she married Bernard Leach, with whom she had previously studied with. Together, in 1956, they moved to Great Britain to operate his studio at St. Ives. Janet Leach continued to be influenced by Japanese aesthetics in her pottery and ceramics. Over the years, her work has increased in popularity and demand. In 2006-2007 there was a major retrospective of her work at Tate St Ives.
The unique work is signed by Janet Leach with her traditional "JL" mark and studio stamp as well as a signed and dated (1971) wooden storage box.
Would be a great addition to collectors of her work or British Studio Pottery or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Rare and special.
Janet Leach's pottery can today be found in many private collections and international museums.
