Tashiko Tazaezu Signed Mid-Century Japanese Hawaiian Studio Pottery Planter Bowl

About the Item

A quite large, heavy, beautifully glazed planter/bowl by famed Japanese Hawaiian American pottery master Toshiko Takaezu. The high-fired stoneware planter features a myriad of shifting earth toned drip glazes over an off white glazed body. It is a unique and one-of-a-kind work. The planter is signed on the base with her traditional "TT" mark/ monogram. From a large Hawaiian collection of a long term client and friend of hers. A rare and special piece (we have only seen one other planter - a smaller piece - like this of Toshiko's). Spectacular in scope and abstract design. Would be a great addition to any collectors of Toshiko's work or other Mid-Century Modern/Hawaiian art potters or an eye-catching stand-alone work in about any setting. Gorgeous overall with a very Wabi-Sabi feel. Takaezu was designated a living treasure in Hawaii in 1987. Her work can be found in numerous collections and museums worldwide including: Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, Pennsylvania Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland Bloomsburg University, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio Canton Museum of Art, Canton, Ohio Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, San Francisco, California Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York Harn Museum of Art, Gainesville, Florida Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee Hunterdon Art Museum, Clinton, New Jersey Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton, New Jersey Hawaii State Art Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia, Honolulu Museum of Art, Honolulu, Hawaii Kresge Art Museum, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Museum of Arts and Design, New York, New York Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, New Jersey Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, New Jersey Racine Art Museum, Racine, Wisconsin Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, Washington Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
