Japanese Asian Wood Shi Shi Shishi Mai Lion Dance Gashira Noh Mask Sculpture

About the Item

A wonderful, beautifully crafted Japanese festival Shishi Lion Dance (Shishi Mai) mask (Gashira). The shishi mask represents a mythical lion that protects and purifies the region in which it dances, driving away evil spirits, famine, and disease. The lion dance (Shishi Mai) is performed during the Japanese lunar New Year and sometimes at festivals celebrating the Buddha's birthday. The lion dance originated in China and was brought to Japan by Chinese travelers sometime around the early 16th century. During the dance, the lion is accompanied by a group of performing taiko drummers, as it walks through the town, dancing and bestowing blessings on locals. To drive away evil spirits, the shishi lion (sometimes the mask takes on different forms such as a deer or cow depending on the village) bites the head of villagers (the mask has an articulated mouth that opens and closes), which brings good luck and health. This piece was from an extensive and well-traveled Los Angeles estate Asian art and artifacts collection. Would clearly be a great addition to any Asian or Japanese artifacts collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. The mask comes with a small display stand, though this was probably added at a later stage. Mask dimensions: 9.5" high, 14.5" wide, 10" deep On stand: 12" high.

This particular delicate featured mask (her red lips really stand out) is used for main and sometimes secondary roles when the character is a young girl or, in some cases, a supernatural being. What is also interesting about this mask is the blackened teeth which centuries ago, was customary for Japanese women to paint their teeth black after they became married. We believe this mask dates from the mid-to early Showa period, perhaps Mejia. The mask was acquired from an antique mask...
