19th Century Black Forest Carved Bear Motif Wood Box with Swing-Out Compartment
About the Item
This unusual antique Black Forest box features a pair of fully dimensional bears cavorting at the base of a tree stump. The mother and cub have been finished with a high level of detail including glass eyes in the larger bear's head. The bears are positioned at the center of the box's hinged lid which lifts to provide access to a rectangular compartment lined in blue velvet. The compartment is hinged at one side and swings out to reveal a slightly larger rectangular storage area at the base which is also lined in blue velvet.
The box has been constructed to appear as if the piece is a miniature chest with two graduated drawers stacked atop one another. Each of the faux drawer fronts bear a disc-shaped turned handle at the center flanked by carved leaves and flowers, all of which are set on a stippled ground. The sides of the box are also decorated with carved flowers and foliage.
The box is in very good original condition showing appropriate signs of age consisting of nicks and scratches to the surface. The lid of the box sits squarely on the base and is securely attached to the body, as is the hinged swing-out compartment. The blue velvet lining found in the interior of the compartments has evidence of slight discoloration and minor separation from the walls, but no rips or tears.
The box stands 5.5" tall to the top of the larger bear's head and measures 5.5" by 3.25" at the base. The top compartment's interior measurements are 3.825" by 2" by 1" while the lower compartment is 4.25" by 2.25" by 1.25".
This charming antique bear motif wood box would be a wonderful addition to a collection of fine Black Forest carving or works equally well displayed on its own. A lovely and useful piece.

This fantastic stoneware table lamp was made in Muncie, Indiana by the talented team of Jim Wishon and Jerry Harrell. The lamp is finished in neutral beige hues with the carved decoration executed in a deeper shade of brown. The felt-lined foot is 6" in diameter and the body is approximately 10" across as measured at its widest point.
The lamp comes with a pleated fabric drum shade manufactured by Kichler. As seen in the accompanying photographs the neutral color of the fabric complements the glaze on the lamp while enabling the darker carved...
