About the Item
19th Century Company school terracotta oxen and cart museum figure
A rare form of mid-19th century Company school terracotta figure. With painted detail across the wood and terracotta base, a hand-crafted wood and bamboo cart upon which a terracotta farmer figure is sat. The oxen are painted terracotta with aged loss and repair. The farmer figure is wearing its original cotton clothes.
Highly naturalistic sculptures of this type were made at Krishnanagar, a village near Calcutta, as well as at Hatwa, Datan (near Saran), Muzaffar-pur, Dacca, Burdwan, and later, Lucknow and Poona. Like Company School paintings, these highly naturalistic sculptures prefigure photography and were made as souvenirs for Western patrons as early as the 1820s. Their inspiration seems to have been 18th and 19th Century Neopolitan creche figures. Identical figures can be seen in the Peabody Museum of Salem.

This amazing example of a late 19th century hand carved sectioned pine organ figure was produced by the world-renowned Ludovic Gavioli. The detail is of the finest quality and the late 19th century was most certainly when Gavioli produced some of his finest work. - "La Immaculada, " Polychromed Mid-19th Century Figural CarvingLocated in West Palm Beach, FLFigural wooden carving of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Immaculate Conception). Carved in folkloric style, this well-preserved statue retains its original coat of polychrome paint. Its flesh tones, light-blue, and silver-gilding vividly shine through a natural patina that has become glossy from a century’s worth of handling. The Virgin as the "Immaculata" (conceived in immaculate purity), is posed on the globe of the world, in triumph over sin, represented by the serpent that tempted Eve with a forbidden apple. The sculpture's facial features include glass eyes and eyelashes. This rare antique sculpture is perfect for a collection of sacred antique...Category
