Depicting a stylized bird form carved in relief and painted in red and black pigment. Frontlets such as this were worn only by people of significance or nobility. Once part of an elaborate headdress, this piece was likely worn by a Chief to welcome guests at a potlatch or other important ceremony. Often worn with a chilkat blanket, and accompanied by a raven rattle, the effect would have been impressive.

The Tlingit and Tsimshian peoples continue to inhabit the Southeastern coast of Alaska as well as Alaska's coastal islands. The original homeland of the Tsimshian is between the Skeena and Nass Rivers in British Columbia, Canada.
