Mid-Century Swedish Outsiders Art "Eve and the Serpent" Sculpture in Wood

About the Item

The Outsider Art Sculpture an ode to the timeless tale of Eve and the Serpent. This enigmatic piece bears witness to the forbidden allure of the Garden of Eden. Crafted in wood-carved oak, stained and partially painted, base adorned with decoration of snake and apple, signed 1954. The artist is known for his odd creation of church chairs in Räpplinge at the island of Öland. The artist are Theodore Karlsson from Björneström, in the middle of Sweden, Provenance: the prominent collector Leif Jonsson, Vaggeryd, a testament to its artistic pedigree and historical significance. According to the account in Genesis, Eva is the first woman, created by God as a companion for Adam in the idyllic paradise. The serpent, however, cunningly tempts Eva to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, leading to the disobedience of God's command. This act is traditionally known as the Fall of Man, symbolizing the introduction of sin and the expulsion of Adam and Eva from Eden. The story is laden with symbolism, exploring themes of temptation, free will, and the consequences of disobedience. Eva's choice, influenced by the serpent, becomes a profound narrative that resonates across cultures and religions, delving into the complexities of human nature and the eternal struggle between good and evil. A whimsical sculpture creates a sense of depth, character, and humanity that complements and enhances the surrounding aesthetic.
