"the Sailor's Return", Unusual Diorama Made on Nantucket, circa 1930

A very expressive piece showing Sankaty Lighthouse in the background. The Shadowbox is made of plaster by Samuel Davis Otis (1899-1961). Samuel Otis was born in Sherwood, NY. He was a nationally known artist: Painter, sculptor and illustrator, and one of the founding members of the silver mine guild of Connecticut. He spent his summers on Nantucket in Sconset at the family home. It was on the Island where Otis became interested in plaster, he made a handful of full figure molds as well as a few pictorial painted dioramas. Otis's great grandfather, James Gorham, was born on Nantucket and had a successful career as a Whaler.
