Antique Chinese traditional medicine trade sign, 19th century or earlier, a hand carved and painted sign with deeply incised and gilded calligraphy for “Bamboo” on a black background. Fashioned from one very heavy, dense, thick board (perhaps Juniper), with original hand wrought iron mounts with square nails on the top edge for hanging. The piece is in excellent condition, showing the signs of its age. This was a sign hung outside a doctor's office, with the Taoist symbol for Resilience (strong, yet modest and flexible): a fascinating example of traditional Chinese folk art, illustrating their holistic medical approach focusing on wellness. One of three companion Chinese doctor's signs. Measures: 16 ¾ in H x 27 ¼ in L x 1 in W $1225.
