International Order of Odd Fellows Grain Painted Message Board
About the Item
The International Order of Odd Fellows is a fraternal organization advocating fellowship with all its members who take Friendship, Love, and Truth as basic guidelines. The Odd Fellows organization formed in England sometime during the 18th century, when it was rather 'odd' to follow the noble values of benevolence, charity, and fraternalism. The IOOF was founded in Baltimore in 1819.
Keokuk, Puckechetuck, and Herman were the names of lodges within the Keokuk order. In Odd Fellowship, the Encampment was the second highest branch, before the Patriarchs Militant. The Odd Fellows Protective Association provided care for widows and orphans. Colfax No. 4 D.R. refers to the Keokuk Rebekah Lodge. Rebekah Lodges are the female auxiliary of the IOOF, founded through the efforts of Schuyler Colfax, the 17th Vice President of the United States.
