American Salesman Sample Late 19th C. Wooden Hay Wagon

About the Item

SALESMAN SAMPLE: Late 19th C. American (4) wheeled hand carved all wooden horse drawn hay wagon, in excellent condition with original gold stenciling to carriage, red stenciling to wheels; in authentic red paint. Metal wheel rims. Slight repair to one side rail. Side rails pivot nicely by fine wooden axle underneath the carriage. Nicely carved seat atop front frame. Side wooden panels attached; rear panel rests between side panels under pressure. This scaled down version of the real hay wagon was likely promoted by itinerant sales people who represented the manufacturer and traveled the countryside and rural American farm communities, seeking out farmers door to door, or they would take orders by leaving an example (salesman sample) on display in a merchant's establishment, canvassing his clients. Note: While this COULD be a toy; my opinion is that it is a salesman sample. I think if it were a toy it would have come with a horse. I have been dealing and collecting toys etc. for quite some time and have never seen this piece, so if it was a toy, it would be fairly scarce with a commensurate value. Also, I purchased it from an extensive salesman's sample collection from a knowledgeable collector. Overall 27” long (carriage 14 1/2” long)  x 10" high  x 8 1/2" wide Great item for Americana, folk art, or toy collector enthusiasts.

This late 19th century miniature 3-drawer dresser with original mirror mounted above, was likely used as a salesman's sample by an itinerant sales person who traveled the countryside promoting his articles, usually by seeking out merchants to take orders based on this scaled down miniature bureau, or by leaving it on display in a merchant's establishment to take orders from that merchant's customers. This American bureau...

American Pottery Pig Bank, Circa 1880's
Located in Incline Village, NV
American pottery still bank in the shape of a pig, used for saving coins (usually pennies) to encourage children the importance of thrift. Pottery still banks are somewhat scarce since the typical way to remove coins was to smash the bank open, albeit, with this particular example, perhaps a knife was used for coin removal (note the wear to the coin slot---see images) or perhaps the additional wear is also from many coins having been deposited. The bank is in good all original condition , from an unknown potter (unmarked) circa 1880's, and probably a variant of #633 "Two Toned Pig" in Andy Moore's "The Penny Bank Book" written in 1984 when collecting pottery banks...
