About the Item
Carved painted wood Ashanti Linguist Staff with bird top and twisted knots forms. A staff like this was the symbol of office for the linguist, a trained orator who spoke on behalf of the Asante ruler of Ghana.
Staff was carved from separate pieces of wood, it is composed of three joined pieces which fit tightly but easily together. See last image.
66 1/2 inches high on custom metal base. Wear, some chips to paint from traditional use.
Created mid 20th century or earlier.
From SW USA collection, previously in the Mark Franklin collection. Mark Franklin was a well-known collector from San Francisco, CA.
