This impressive early twentieth-century stool, from the Ashanti culture in Ghana, depicts an elephant - an Ashanti symbol of power and strength. Finely carved from a heavy brown wood, this large stool had a spiritual meaning alongside its functional use as a seat. In Ashanti society, it is customary for every man and woman to have their own stool, which served as the seat of the owner's soul.
