Early Twentieth-Century Small Prestige Stool With Wirework Decoration

About the Item

This early twentieth-century prestige stool comes from the Kamba culture in Kenya. Consisting of a low-set, richly decorated circular seat supported by three finely carved legs, stools such as this would mainly have been used and kept by Kamba elders as a symbol of prestige and importance. Adorning the top of the seat is an intricate, inlaid wirework design, which displays a shimmering two-toned pattern of twisted copper and brass wires. The underside of the seat has also been decorated, in which the metal has been crafted into various geometric and bird motifs. ‍Provenance: Ex Private Collection, UK Estimated Period: First Quarter of 20th Century
