About the Item

Ifugao, Northern Philippines, 19th century Decorated with different kinds of beadwork and the bill of a Kalaw bird (hornbill). Historically, only those who had proven themselves through acts of bravery, including headhunting, could wear these headdresses. For the Ilongot, headhunting was once a means of channeling grief and rage, particularly in response to personal loss, and it served as a rite of passage into adulthood. Wearing the headdress signified not only that a man had engaged in this practice but that he had gained an elevated position within the social structure, marked by courage and maturity.
