Large Eagle Weathervane, A Particularly Early Example, 1850-80

About the Item

LARGE EAGLE WEATHERVANE, A PARTICULARLY EARLY EXAMPLE FOR THIS FORM, A GREAT FIND WITH LEGITIMATE EARLY SURFACE AND APPROPRIATE WEAR, CA 1850-80: Eagle weathervanes are not precisely unusual. They donâ??t outnumber horses or roosters, but probably are tied in third place with bulls and cows. Three things, however, are special about this particular example. One is its early date. This same basic style, with slight differences, can be seen in 1920â??s examples, often being sold as 19th century by wishful auction houses as well as the trade. The construction is one notable difference between this bird and later examples. Note how it is seamed along the breast, under the wings on each side, in a long arch that runs basically parallel to the bent legs. The seams are all joined with a wide solder, in a more crude fashion, as can be expected in an earlier vane. Another key element is the legitimacy of the surface and wear. There are three surfaces upon the full-bodied copper form. The first is gilded. Very little of the original gilding can now been seen due to extended wear, as expected for one that seems to have perched on a roof for at the least many decades and quite possibly well over a century. Most of the body is covered in green verdigris. Note how the verdigris does not cover the solder jointsâ??a tell-tale sign in faked surfaces. Hundreds of weathervanes with forged surfaces flood the antiques marketplace. I estimate maybe 1 legitimate surface, early vane for every 30-40 complete fakes and/or examples with significantly altered surfaces. The final surface on this particular example is a rust red paint, with appropriate, legitimate craquelure, weathering, and loss. It was common for tin roofs to be re-painted and for the person doing it to paint right over the weathervane. Across the top of the wings and back, note the beautiful supportive ironwork with great naturally pitted wear, as well as the beautiful oxidation of the mostly verdigris surface. Gilding and paint were no match for the elements on the part of the form that received the most direct sunlight and weather, especially flat surfaces such as this area and the tail. The post below the large ball is rusted and worn accordingly and the sleeve is split, exhibiting wear according to its term of use. Vanes with posts that donâ??t show this kind of wear and weathering, from spinning round-and-round on the mount for many years, donâ??t meet the expected requirements for 19th century dating. Another nice element is the bold, large size. While others exist in this form, larger eagles are more seldom seen and, more importantly, large, legitimate eagle weathervanes are few and far between. Maker: The J. L. Mott Iron Works, founded in new York in 1828, is known to have produced this form. Eagle weathervanes in this basic style are thus often attributed to Mott, but the truth is that like weathervane forms were produced and/or copied across many firms, so unless a vane is signed or very unusual and distinctiveâ??and few wereâ??attributing one to any particular manufacturer falls somewhere between difficult and impossible. Condition: There appear to be various solder repairs, all of which are early and period to use. There are various dents and some cracks, as well as losses to the original gilding and the rust red over-paint, also consistent with long-term use. The rod is rusted and its outer sheath has several splits, but is at the same time sturdy. Mounting: There is a standing table mount.
